“Get Moving!” Free Health Lecture for Seniors

Seniors can help protect their quality of life by learning about exercises that can improve their muscle strength and balance at Winthrop-University Hospital’s free Health Update for Seniors Program, “Get Moving! Exercises to Improve Mobility,” on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. The program begins with the lecture at 1:15 PM, followed by blood pressure checks at 2:45 PM.  It will be held at the Mineola Community Center, located at 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola.

Studies show that exercise is key to healthy aging and that it’s never too late to start. Muscle mass can increase at any age in response to exercise, as well as leg strength and walking speed. In addition, exercise can help improve balance and prevent falls, which present a major health threat to seniors. Statistics show that one in three adults age 65 and older fall each year; of those who fall, 20% to 30% suffer moderate to severe injuries, and many of those never fully recover.

Grace Rowan, MSN, RN, Community Outreach Educator at Winthrop, will discuss the benefits of exercise, highlighting the importance of balance and demonstrating targeted exercises that can help reduce the risk of falls. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.
