“Palliative Care vs. Hospice: What's the Difference?"

Free Lecture for Seniors Sponsored by Winthrop-University Hospital.

At all stages of life and in every stage of chronic illness, being treated compassionately and with concern for our physical and emotional well-being is crucial to every one of us. In an effort to educate the public about palliative care and hospice, clear up some common misconceptions, and explain how each healthcare approach can help to enhance an individual’s quality of life, Winthrop-University Hospital will sponsor a free lecture for seniors, “Palliative Care vs. Hospice: What’s the Difference?” on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at 1:15 PM.

The program will be held at the Mineola Community Center, located at 155 Washington Avenue in Mineola (one block south of Jericho Turnpike, between Mineola and Willis Avenues).

Paula Lester, MD, Associate Program Director of Geriatric Medicine at Winthrop, Board Certified in Internal, Geriatric and Palliative Medicine, will explore this sensitive topic and explain the Palliative Care Information Act, hospice, the latest findings, and how choosing comfort care does not have to mean ending treatment. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

The program begins with the lecture at 1:15 PM, followed by blood pressure checks at 2:30 PM. Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required.  To reserve a seat, please call (516) 663-3916.
