Stroke Risk Assessment & Stroke Awareness Fair

According to the National Stroke Association, stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the United States. Learn to become stroke smart.

In recognition of National Stroke Awareness month in May, Winthrop-UniversityHospital’s Institute for Neurosciences will host a Stroke Awareness Fair and Free Stroke Risk Assessment for the community on Thursday, May 12, 2011, at 6:30 p.m.  The program begins with individual stroke risk assessments and the Stroke Awareness Fair at 6:30 p.m., followed by a lecture at 7:30.

The assessment will consist of a blood pressure check, carotid bruit check, and risk factor review. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for a free vascular screening at a future date.

Sarah Cherian, MD, Attending Vascular Neurologist at Winthrop-University Hospital will discuss risk factors, prevention and the different types of stroke. Dr. Cherian will also explain how to recognize the signs of a stroke, why you need to act fast and the latest information about available treatments. A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

The Stroke Awareness Fair will feature representatives from Winthrop’s Institute for Neurosciences and other departments, who will answer questions and provide information about important stroke-related prevention and recovery issues, such as Speech-Language Services, Occupational and Physical Therapy, Home Care, Social Work, and more. Representatives from various community resources will also be available to answer questions.

The Stroke Assessment Fair is free, but reservations are required. To make a reservation, please call (516) 663-8300. Parking and the entrance are available in the rear of the building. A light meal will be provided.
