Other news from the Aug. 11 board of education meeting.

The  held a meeting on Thursday, Aug. 11. Here’s a look at some of the things you may have missed.

Contracts with Personnel

  • New agreements were signed with both Assistant Superintendent of Finance Jack Waters and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Patricia Burns.
  • Agreements were also signed with chief information officer Sharon Macken as well as former Principal Matthew Gavin, the .
  • The employees are central office administrators and civil service personnel and are not part of a unionized group, therefore they require separate contracts with provisions and salaries which must be approved each year by the board of education.
  • The major change was that the new contracts will be for a period of 3 years, with a 0 percent raise in the second year. Years one and three will feature raises of 2 percent. Both Burns and Waters will contribute 20 percent to their health care costs, which is different than rest of the district.
  • “We’re locking them into working as a team for 3 years and their salaries accordingly,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Nagler said. “All of their salaries at the end of the 3 years still are below the current average for all of their positions.”
  • Historically raises have been given at 4 percent each year.
  • “I think we’re getting a bargain, it’s a great team,” Dr. Nagler said. “I’m very happy the board has agreed to do this.”

  • Dr. Nagler reported that the expanded parking lot at the for Solomon Schechter will be completed before August 26. The district is using same contractor who is .
  • Architectural drawings for the new softball field behind the were recently put out to bid. Drawings for the Hampton Street project have been finalized and were submitted to the State Education Department for review. “We hope to get a speedy turnaround on that and put that out to bid. in late September, early October,” Dr. Nagler said. The district is currently reviewing the plans for the art room at the high school and renovated Jackson Avenue cafeteria. A presentation will be to the board on September 1 with drawings and cost estimates.
  • A new policy entitled “Fund Balance” was adopted after its second reading. The board adopted the tax levy for the 2011-12 school year in the amount of $74,798,377.
