Mineola Board of Ed Notebook: Dec. 2

Other news from the Dec. 2 board of education meeting.

The Mineola Board of Education held a workshop session on Thursday, Dec. 2. Here are some of the things you may have missed.

Hampton Street School Improvements

  • Superintendent Dr. Michael Nagler discussed improvements to the , which will be the South school for pre-kindergarten to second grade students. At the last meeting, the Board decided to instead of making the addition part of a referendum. 
  • Nagler discussed a plan for including an art room and a music room. The superintendent also proposed adding a library media center to the project. 
  • The total cost of the project is estimated at $2.1 million and is expected to be discussed further at the next board meeting.

  • If any parent is concerned about registered sex offenders living in the community, Nagler announced that they can go to the Parents for Megan's Law website in order to sign up to be notified if a sex offender moves into the neighborhood and to do a search by zip code on those registered as living in the area. A link can also be found on the school district's website
  • Dr. Nagler said he will be to the in New York State. One proposal being discussed is eliminating all Regents exams except for algebra and English. Another proposal calls for charging school districts $5.93 per Regents exam per student. The changes are contingent on the funding the state education department receives from the state legislature.
