Mineola Students Judge 'Flame Challenge'

Middle school students judge entries defining a flame for young scientists.

Students in Rich Richards’, Karen Carraro’s and Vince Interrante's classes at recently judged the “Flame Challenge,” a contest that asks the question “What is a flame?”

Sponsored by the Center for Communicating Science and actor Alan Alda, scientists from around the world submitted essays, poems, videos and cartoons explaining what a flame is in a way that an 11-year-old would understand.

More than 20 students from Mineola Middle School will be attending the awards ceremony on June 2 at the Kaye Theater at Hunter College in NYC.
