Chaminade Basketball Stuffs Holy Trinity 80-58

The Flyers (10-2) survived a clash with the Titans and moved to the top of the NSCHSAA.

Certain teams have a few good players that they rely on, that they fall back to when times are tough to help get them through.

Great teams – the ones they often associate with that most reverential word, dynasty – have a core of players, spreading the weight around and lifting their teammates up when the job is too much for one.

Some teams have four – Jeter, Posada, Pettitte and Rivera for the Yankees during the 90s – and some have three – Jordan, Pippen, Rodman of the same era Bulls.

It’s appropriate that Chaminade was playing Holy Trinity Tuesday night , the iconography of the Flyers senior troika of guards Kevin Sheehy, Matther Gonyon and center Richard Zoller not being lost on the faithful, nor on the scoreboard – 80-58 in favor of the Flyers after 60, their second-highest of the season.

At 7:19 in the first quarter, it was Gonyon with a steal and fast break to put his team on the board. At 6:30, he struck back with another. At 6:11, Zoller took his turn and at 4:31 Sheehy added a three-pointer to put the Flyers up 9-0.

The Flyer guard must have thought that scoring almost a full four minutes into the first was just plain lazy, so he rectified it by sinking a baseline three a mere 10 seconds into the second quarter. Not to be outdone, Gonyon added a three of his own just before the halftime buzzer hit.

While it is no secret that the duo are quite light on their feet and adept at handling the ball, Zoller might be sneaking in some classes from the Harlem Globetrotters. Displaying swift, quick body movement and precise placement in addition to the eight boards he grabbed, the 6’7” center operates with a level of grace that is uncommon to most who play the position. Not to mention, he went 12-13 from the free throw line.

Zoller and Shaquile O’Neal may not have much in common for Hall of Fame credentials (yet), but a glass-shaking dunk he made with 2:00 left does sound like something the Celtic player would do.

“We all feed off of each other,” Sheehy said, finishing with 14 points including a perfect six for six from the line. “We were firing on all cylinders tonight,” Gonyon added, who ended his day with 15 points.

The trio’s contributions aside, the rest of the team, particularly senior forward Christopher Kustera, did their part in securing the conference win, netting the Flyers a solid grip on first place in the process. Kustera tagged on nine points and his 13 rebounds were undeniably crucial to the Flyer campaign.

Head Coach Jim Quinn couldn’t be more pleased. “Everyone showed great effort tonight,” he said, still crediting Holy Trinity. “They are a great shooting team that never lets us feel safe,” he admitted, “so we have to put them away when we have a chance.”

Chaminade’s latest win puts them in first place in the NSCHSAA with a conference record of 4-0 and 10-2 overall.

The Flyers will hold off patting themselves on the back as they will continue conference play afternoon before .
