Chaminade Bowling Extends Streak with 9-0 Win Over St. Mary’s

A mostly Fenn-less Flyer team extends win steak to six straight games.

It was more of the same Tuesday afternoon for the steam-rolling Flyers (6-1), who rolled their way to a 9-0 victory over , albeit this time on their home lanes at .

The Flyers haven't had a home game , but any potential rust brought on by the time spent away from their home turf and the pause of the holiday break was minimal at best.

"It is always iffy how you will do after coming back from a long break," Coach Steven Toner said.

It helped that the individual members practiced over the holidays, "some more than others," Toner admitted, and the Flyers got in a team practice Monday.

The Flyers' dedication showed as they hit the lanes with fresh fresh vigor. Freshman Nick Niles – who is quickly becoming a Chaminade bowling staple – kicked off the new year with a 224 in game one, 230 in game two and superb 255 in game three, and may very well be a locomotive with all the momentum the southpaw builds.

Although he had a little trouble picking up the last lingering pin in the latter two games, Matt Wodicka opened the gap for his team in game one with a 233. The junior's season high single game score included 10 strikes, six of which he earned in a row.

Other Flyers that flew high included juniors John Lindgren and Joe Bucaria. Lindgren started the day on the practice lane but after his 214, he was deemed ready to make it official. A powerful game two followed in which he racked up a 223. Bucaria started on the practice lane as well for the first time this season but secured a 215 in game two and 200 in game three after being called up.

Team captain junior Andrew Fenn had an uncharacteristically rough start with a 161 in game one and was subsequently moved to the practice lane for the rest of the match. However, "The Fennanator," as his name was spelled on the score screen, took the opportunity to work his way back to the pin pillager Chaminade knows and loves. His practice score during game two was no less than 247, including seven strikes in a row to finish.

Any bystander could tell that the Flyers were floating on air not only after just extending their winning streak to six, but after avenging their 2009-2010 playoff loss to St. John the Baptist right before the holiday break. Bucaria could even be heard filling St. Mary's in on the nail-biting, stomach-in-throat win by eight pins.

Despite his team's achievements so far this season, Toner maintains that staying on their toes is important for the Flyers in the latter half of the season. "Teams are only getting better, and if we don't get better with them," he said, "it will be a rough remainder of the season."

Chaminade's next match will be in Plainview.
