Chaminade Bowling Rolls Over Bayhawks

Victory over St. Dominic's brings the Flyers' winning streak to three.

The  bowling team improved their record to 3-1 with an effortless 8-1 win over St. Dominic at Syosset Lanes Thursday afternoon.

The Bayhawks' home turf was packed with red and yellow shirts as Chaminade made their overwhelming presence felt. Their 11-man roster was simply too much for the seven St. Dominic players to handle as Flyer coach Steven Toner mixed up the pairs so that every single bowler got playing time on either the 'A' or 'B' squad.

Chaminade has had trouble getting practice time at AMF Sheridan Lanes, but Toner was able to hold a Monday practice to sharpen his team's skills. Despite being an away game Thursday, the similar lanes of AMF of Syosset provided a familiar setting and the lanes were freshly oiled before the match. According to Toner, "the oil makes a big difference and most of my bowlers prefer it fresh."

Starting junior Andrew Fenn and lefty freshman Nick Niles have already become 'A' team staples. Captain Fenn put his team ahead early with a 243 score in the first game. Niles compounded that with a solid 195 of his own and first-time starter Alex Cipollone did a decent job keeping up with his heavy hitting teammates. The freshman bowled a respectable 173 in game one.

As the season progresses, the line between Chaminade's 'A' and 'B' squads continues to dwindle. Joe Bucaria did his part to blur the line as the junior accumulated eight strikes and an overall 201 in the first game.

The combined efforts of Chaminade's 'A' and 'B' squads put the Flyers 273 pins above the Bayhawks after game one, and they continued to cruise from that point on. Fenn buried eight strikes of his own and a 238 game two score to keep momentum. Likewise, Niles got back on track with a 228. 'B' team member Bucaria bowled a 204 while junior John Lindgren rolled a game one score of 229 in the practice lane, matching it with a 239 for the 'B' team in game two. The Flyers had a commanding 515 pin lead after the second game.

Although the Flyer 'B' team lost game three by a mere 25 pins, freshman Ryan Egan was the surprise of the day. The young lefty usually found on the practice lanes strolled onto the 'B' lane with confident grace. He racked up six strikes and a 204 overall.

Bayhawk head captain Ed Jensen was the standout for his team. The senior rolled a 634 after his three games, including a commendable 220 in the third game. Coach Mike Gordek had no illusions about toppling his competition. "Chaminade," he said, "St. John the Baptist and Holy Trinity are in a class of their own."

Gordek does, however, have high hopes for his team's Monday date with Kellenberg. He thinks the Bayhawks have a good chance of improving to a 2-2 record after the away match, especially with the help of a Sunday practice session.

Chaminade will get their shot . Toner believes that the Flyers will do "decently" against Kellenberg and is decidedly more concerned about the match after. His boys will "have a tough match" the following Thursday , the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last season.
