Chaminade Bowling Rolls Over St. Anthony's 7-2

Flyer 'B' squad acts as 'A' team for the day.

The bowling team rolled past St. Anthony's seven games to two at Tuesday afternoon to pick up their second win of the season.

After falling just short to reigning NSCHSAA champs and then earning a decisive  eight days later, Chaminade seems to have found their footing and is progressing full steam ahead.

The short Thanksgiving hiatus had no effect on Flyer Nick Niles. The freshman opened up with a 232 on his first of two games, giving him good reason to do his trademark hand-clap after his throws. In addition, team captain Andrew Fenn continued to assert himself and reached a score of 611 after three games. The junior's second game was one for the highlight reel, during which he racked up seven strikes and a total of 236 points.

The biggest impact, however, was made by Chaminade's 'B' team, who  managed to out-bowl their 'A' team cohorts 603-570 in total wood in the second game. Second squad junior Joe Bucaria exploded out of the gate with a 237 in the first game while teammate sophomore Phil Loeschinger secured the highest single game score of the match with an impressive 256 when he filled in for senior Anthony Zangrillo in the second game.

Although a physically larger team comprised mainly of juniors and seniors, St. Anthony's (1-3) is still a relatively new team. "Some of them have never thrown a finger tip bowling ball before," said Coach Steve Broluk, who also made it a point that he is "proud of how far they have come." Broluk insisted that once the Friars familiarize themselves more with the game, they will "get nothing but stronger." Captain Dan Campana and Matt Zsevc co-led their team in single game scores with 189 points each.

Despite spending the first two games trailing their counterparts, the Friars often ventured smiles and gestures of support to their teammates throughout the afternoon. In fact, for a school that serves as such a staunch rival to Chaminade in most other sports, you wouldn't guess that was the case with bowling. "The kids are well-behaved and the coaches are very friendly," Flyer coach Steven Toner said.

Although Chaminade is beginning to show signs of momentum, Toner has no inclination to promote relaxation among his squad. Finding time to practice has been a problem for the Flyers, not due to laziness or lack of opportunity, but because "Sheridan Lanes is very busy" and Toner has had trouble arranging lane time for his crew. Toner assured that the team would move forward regardless of the current practice situation.

Chaminade will face off against and while Toner feels that "we should fair well against them," both he and his team refuse to let their guards down.
