Chaminade Bowling Shuts Out St. Mary’s for First Win of 2010

Flyer Nick Niles paves the way with a 750 score.

's varsity bowling squad triumphed over St. Mary's in a three-games-to-zero victory on Wednesday afternoon at Rockville Centre Lanes in their second match and first away game of the season.

The Flyers had no trouble adapting to the away wood at RVC Lanes after , Holy Trinity, last week at home. In a match that saw every member of the team getting to stretch their wrists, both 'A' and 'B' teams dominated in all three of their games.

Freshman Nick Niles was the hero of the day, building a momentum off of his impressive debut last week with a 750 score after his three games. In addition, juniors Andrew Fenn and John Lindgren showed their prowess by rolling a 410 and a 446, respectively after two games before handing the reins over to the younger arms of the squad.

The Gaels, described as still being a "young" team, with the exception of senior Matthew Staura - who scored a 522 after three games - bowled earnestly in their season opener amidst cheers of encouragement from their coach, Jeff Fennel.

"Better, better, excellent!" Fennel praised occasionally, carefully mimicking the motions of a proper ball release to his players. "We have a lot of work in front of us," he said, "but we will make it through."

Chaminade coach Steven Toner, on the other hand, took a more laissez-faire approach to the match. Hands clasped behind his back and watching his team intently, he paused for a congratulatory hand-slap or two and a round of applause here and there. "We struggled a little bit coming out of the gate against Holy Trinity," he said, "but they guys bowled closer to their potential today."

While giving the Flyers their due, Toner admitted that they "still need to practice, especially on the seven and the ten pins." He added that although the season is still young, "we have the playoffs in the backs of our minds."

The Flyers are "jockeying for position" and a sea of opponents awaits them, starting with arch-rival St. Anthony's on Nov. 30 at . "(We're) happy for the win and will see how it goes from there," Toner said.
