Chaminade Hockey Edges Fordham Prep 2-1

James Henry found himself sliding across the ice Wednesday.

Usually that’s a bad thing in hockey. For the Chaminade forward, he was exactly where he needed to be, though he didn’t know it – right in front of the Fordham Prep net.

“I just went hard to the net, taking trash, playing hard, just trying to win the game. I just went hard to the net to see and try to make something happen,” the young Flyer forward said.

Both the Flyers and Rams had been trading zeroes through the first two periods at , with Fordham finally breaking through 5:40 into the third off a shot by Ryan Mahoney.

“We got to get it back right away,” Michael Minarczyk thought. Twenty-three seconds later the score was knotted again thanks to Minarczyk being fed off an assit from Joseph Vella and Nick Marchiselli.

“We got the puck down low and Vella tied the guy up,” the Chaminade junior said. “I picked the puck up and just threw it on net and it found a way in.”

Despite having failed at the breakaway shot after the goal, Henry had managed to pull himself up onto his skates.

There was defenseman Michael Ferris. With the puck.

A short pass to Henry. A small pivot. A quick shot.

Goal.

“We know that we’re always in the game, especially with our defense; if they give up they’re not going to give up many more,” Chaminade assistant coach Kevin Bendl said after the game. “It was a good battle. They were tough kids, they took the body a lot. They were a very physical team which is tough for us because we haven’t played a team like that.”

Goalie Brandon Destasio had blocked 21 shots the Rams made on net, while the Flyers had 18 total against Fordham.

“We got one then came back, got the second. In any game we always know that we’re in we have that good of a first, second, third line, even our fourth line could put it in,” Bendl said.
