Dragons Smoke Mineola Girls 56-34 in Quarterfinals

Lady Mustangs incur 12 team fouls in playoff ending contest.

Senior guard Julie Ballantyne scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead Division (17-1) to a 56-34 win over the Mineola Lady Mustangs (15-4) in the Nassau Class A quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon at .

Senior guard Breanne Connolly (14 points) added four three-pointers for the Lady Dragons, who extended their winning streak to 12 games and advance to face Lynbrook in the semifinals next Tuesday at Freeport.

The Lady Dragons have won 22 consecutive games at home, a streak that dates back to Feb. 18 of last year.

Division jumped out to an early 7-0 edge on clutch layups from Ballantyne and senior guard Christina Rea.

The Lady Mustangs were held scoreless through the first six minutes of action, but senior forward Kalie put her team on the board with a dazzling layup as time wound down in the first quarter. Solid rebounding and steadfast defense by Division senior forward Kristen Stuart helped to hold Mineola to just eight points in the opening stanza.

Division opened up a 21-11 lead midway through the second quarter on two consecutive layups from Stuart, who used her size advantage to fight through traffic in the paint.

Rea then banked two free-throw shots before the halftime buzzer to give the Lady Dragons a 25-13 lead at the break.

With their season on the line, Mineola left it all out on the court when the game resumed. Junior center Kerri Medlock scored five of her team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter and senior forward Heather Gessner added six in the second half.

The Lady Mustangs found themselves in severe foul trouble late in the game and finished with 12 team-fouls by the end of regulation.

With three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Julie Ballantyne made a catch-in-transition, ball-faked and knocked down a feathery 10-foot jumper to put the game out of reach and seal the 56-34 victory for the Lady Dragons.

"Division is ranked No. 1 for a reason" Mineola head coach Denise Zunno said. "Our team gave a heartfelt effort, but they have some really great players and an excellent coach."

The Lady Dragons' win puts them one step closer to the Class A championship and they move deeper into the playoffs with a confident swagger. "We're expecting to go far" said Connolly. "This team has great chemistry and we'll keep playing hard."
