Flyers Bowling Scores Shutout Over St. Anthony's

Chaminade raises win streak to seven as Fenn returns and underclassmen reach new heights.

bowling team captain Andrew Fenn must have wanted a little extra holiday vacation, so he hired a body double. That could be the only explanation for why the usually money-in-the-bank junior bowled and was then relocated to the practice lane.

It initially appeared that his doppelganger returned for Thursday’s match against St. Anthony’s in Plainview as well, because the person who the score screen designated as ‘Andrew Fenn’ started off game one rather tepidly, with a strike and a few spares - good stats for the layman but only mediocre for someone of Fenn’s caliber.

It was in the sixth frame of game one Thursday, that ‘The Fennenator’ approached the lane as the strike machine the team had come to know, clearing seven lanes and finishing the first game with a daunting 248. Fenn proceeded to prove that he was back by bowling a respective 245 and 220 in games two and three, respectively, leading to a season high 713 series.

Between Fenn’s 713 series and junior Matt Wodicka’s season high 233 game one score Tuesday, 2011 seems to be the year of new personal bests.

The theory is perpetuated by performances from Flyer underclassmen Thursday as freshman Alex Cipollone started game one alongside Fenn and fellow freshman Nick Niles, solidifying himself among them by earning a season high 205 score including eight strikes. In game two, he beat his own record with a 207.

Likewise, sophomore Matt Weiss emerged from the practice lane and earned himself a season high 224 in game three.

Arguably the most impressive performance of the day was from freshman Ryan Egan. The rookie southpaw has been steadily improving throughout the season and progressed to a personal best of 230 after hitting an overwhelming 10 strikes including seven in a row to finish game three.

While the Flyers were certainly on top of their game, it does not taking anything away from St. Anthony’s. The two teams last met Nov. 30 with Chaminade taking that match 7-2. Although the score might indicate;l otherwise, the Friars have improved considerably. Chaminade’s ‘A’ team ran away with the match a bit, but the Friars gave the ‘B’ team a run for their money.

The Flyers’ ‘B’ team were able to secure all three games, but they struggled, only winning games two and three by a respective four and 13 pins largely due to ever-dependable junior, Joe Bucaria’s 592 series. Sophomore Phil Loeschinger also came through with a respective 192 and 210 in games one and two.

Chaminade freshman Nick Niles sprinted out of the gate with six strikes in a row and nine total for a 231 score in game one before slowing down. The lefty managed a merely ok (for him) 184 in game two before transferring to the practice lane in the third match.

“The lanes were just perfect for my guys today,” coach Steven Toner said, pleased with his team’s performance.

Chaminade seems to have found their stride at just the right time because they have a trying week ahead: matches and staunch rival are set for Monday and Tuesday respectively before heading to Levittown to face the 2009-2010 NSCHSAA champion .
