Flyers Bowling Vanquishes St. Dominic’s

A reinvigorated Fenn helped Chaminade reach their eighth straight win.

Flyer captain Andrew Fenn, who usually finishes each game with a score well into the 200s, bowled a uncharacteristic single game score of 161 and was demoted to the practice lane for the rest of the match.

The junior anchorman rebounded with a season high 713 series two days later , but the question was who was going to show up at Monday afternoon against St. Dominic’s?

Would it be the Andrew Fenn with a case of post-holiday blues, or would it be his lane-clearing alter ego, “The Fennenator”?

Fenn kept everyone in suspense after bowling a 195 in game one, which is solid but not up to his usual standard. However, when game two started, he might as well have adopted an Austrian accent.

The junior rocked the lanes with a 248, including five strikes in a row to start the game and three to finish. Game three played out in similar fashion, with Fenn delivering a 235 and reaching a 678 series, his third highest of the season.

Sophomore Phil Loeschinger did his duty by kicking off the match with a 223 and then rolling a 206 in game two before handing the reins to sophomore Matt Weiss in game three.

Juniors Joe Bucaria, John Lindgren and senior Anthony Zangrillo played together as a team on the lanes providing consistent numbers with the exception of Bucaria’s breakout 217 game one score. Zangrillo finished the first two games with a respective 180 and 183 while Bucaria ended game two with a 186. Lindgren supplied a 176 in game one but a questionable foot fault brought his score down to a 162 in game two.

Apparently Lindgren stepped into the gutter in the sixth frame, but the automatic alarm did not go off and the foul was entered manually as a result of St. Dominic’s Coach Mike Gordek claiming to witness the act.

Freshman Alex Cipollone, who earned a season high single game score of 207 against St. Mary’s last week, performed well in games two and three with a respective 190 and 174, but other Flyers struggled.

Junior Matt Wodicka and sophomores Matt Weiss and John Papa had trouble picking up spares. In addition, freshman Ryan Egan was coming off a season high single game 230 score from last Thursday’s game against St. Anthony’s but ran into some bad luck with splits, leading to a 140 in game three.

While it wasn’t the best overall Flyer performance, it was enough to secure their eighth straight victory and third straight shutout. St. Dominic’s only had five players, so they were given a blind score of 140 for the missing player in each game as a result.

coach Steven Toner benched ace freshman Nick Niles to even the odds for St. Dominic and compensate for their disadvantage. The southpaw spinner spent games one and two in the practice lane, earning a respective 212 and 214 before knocking his way to a 233 upon entering the fray in game three.

“I wanted to give another kid a chance,” Toner said, “and at the same time I need to figure out who my seventh and eighth men are.”

You can bet that Niles will not be spending one minute in the practice lane when Chaminade . The two teams last clashed right before the holiday break, with the Flyers squeaking by after a foot fault and an eight pin difference.

“Everybody needs to be on their game,” Toner said, “and if they are, then we are in good shape,” admitting that “being at home is a slight advantage.”
