Flyers Hockey Edges St. Mary’s 5-4

Senior Michael Ferris nets winning goal late in third period to lift Chaminade over Gaels.

Twice the  varsity hockey team had lost it; first squandering a 3-0 lead, then a one goal advantage.

By the third period, defenseman Michael Ferris had had enough.

After a feed from junior James Henry, the senior slapped one past St. Mary’s goalie Kirchelli who was doing his best impression of the Manhasset school’s brick façade on Clapham Avenue as he stopped 42 of the Flyer’s shots on the short end of a 5-4 Flyer victory at Cantiague Park Rink in Hicksville Thursday night.

“I talked to (goalie) Chris (Agnone) before the play and he’s like ‘I’m sorry, man, you’ve got to get this back for me’,” Ferris said. “I got the pass, I brought it in and I saw my opportunity and I took it. (Agnone) had a strong game though.”

The senior goalkeeper had 21 total saves against an aggressive St. Mary’s team that while falling to defending champions St. Anthony’s, held the Friars to one goal until the third period.

“We should have had them earlier but we kept coming back and we just had to fight for it,” Ferris said.

Henry and Dillon Radin set the tone early, scoring two of the opening three Flyer goals and assists, respectively with additional help from Andrew Veglucci on the latter net. Henry narrowly missed a hat trick in the game late in the third on a breakaway.

The Gaels though would come back repeatedly, scoring three late in the first and matching John Stevenson’s net in the second.

“We just had to come back from that, it was really tough,” Ferris said.
