Flyers Hockey Shuts Out Holy Cross 8-0

Senior goalie Thomas Dorsey makes 20 saves in first game back since injury.

Senior twins Dylan (3 goals, 3 assists) and Matthew Scarpato (1 goal, 5 assists) combined for 12 points as the varsity hockey team earned their first and only win of the season in an 8-0, blowout win over Holy Cross (Flushing) Monday at the World Ice Arena in Flushing Meadow Park.

"We got Matt Scarpato back from being sick and we got him on the line with his brother Dylan and things really clicked," Flyers coach Frank Bendl said. "I believe their line combined for six goals. We didn't play as strong as we could have, but it was a win any way you look at it."

Matt Scarpato and senior Anthony Ambrosino fed Dylan Scarpato to put the Flyers up 1-0 at 5:36 in the first period.

In the second, Dylan added two more goals while Nick Falco and Anthony Ambrosino each had a goal to make the score 5-0 over the winless Knights.

Ambrosino scored again in the third period and Matt Scarpato scored his only goal to go along with five assists in the victory. Matt Scarpato and junior Richard Podpirka assisted junior Joseph Vella on the last goal of the game. 

The victory snapped a four game losing streak for the Flyers and also marked the . Dorsey made 20 saves in his first game since Nov. 28. "Tommy is solid and can keep us in every game, helps us be more competitive," Bendl said. "He was fantastic." 

The Flyers totaled 36 shots on goal against Holy Cross and scored three short handed. Dylan Scarpato completed his first hat trick of the season on a power play in the second period.

"We put some pucks in the net and that's important and we got a win, that's important," Bendl said. "It's OK that we won the game but we still have to play better than we did. Even a little more measured and disciplined defensively"

CROSS CHECK: The Flyers play Holy Cross again on Jan. 28 in Coney Island and on Feb. 2 for the last game of the season at Ice Hutch. The Knights were champions in the CHSHL B Division last year.
