Flyers’ Mahon and Kavanagh Join U.S. U-19 Lacrosse Team

Chaminade teammates Sean Mahon and Matthew Kavanagh will for the 2012 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) U19 Men’s World championships.

2012’s Team U.S.A. is looking to defend its 2008 title, when it won gold after beating Canada 19-12.

Mahon, a midfielder from Garden City who attends Harvard, and Kavanagh, an attacker from Rockville Center who is attending Notre Dame, both graduated from Chaminade in 2011. Mahon was an as a senior while Kavanagh was named CHSAA attackman of the year and team MVP.

Mahon and Kavanagh were by a player selection committee that included Flynn and assistant coaches Jack Crawford, Tom Duquette and Tom Rotanz as well as 20 coaches from 15 different states.

So far, the US team has a 4-2 record in the tournament seating them in third place, having been dealt their first two defeats in history due to an 11-9 ovetime loss to Canada and a 15-13 defeat from the Iroquois.

The U.S. finished pool play with a 2-2 record and will now play the winner of Germany-Wales in a quarterfinal game at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Turku. Team USA has never needed to play in the quarterfinal round since sanctioned international U19 play began in 1988. The loss drops its overall record to 38-2.

Kavanagh leads the team with 12 goals scored through Tuesday and 4 assists, while Mahon has 2 goals to his credit.
