Flyers Zoom Past Competition at 2011 Long Island Track and Field Invitational

’s varsity track team came ready to win at Saturday’s “Elite Indoor Meet” hosted by in Melville placing 15 runners in the day’s events.

The Long Island Track and Field High School Invitational was held at St. Anthony’s two year old multi-million dollar indoor athletic facility.

Flyer Coach Pat Slevin has been coaching at Chaminade for the last 7 years, the last two of which as head coach. Together with assistant coach Tom Kehrli, they used the Invitational, which brought out all the top track and field teams from schools across Long Island, to prepare the squad for the upcoming major track meets.

This winter track season has been especially tough because of the all the snowstorms keeping the outdoor tracks covered. The Flyers still managed to get conditioned by using their indoor track in the Athletic Activity Center and busing the runners to Christopher Morley Park to run in the parking lot.

“It has definitely toughened our team up” Slevin said.

“We just came off the CHAA championship, where we won for the first time since ’98, we scored in almost every one of the running events, we even had about six kids qualify from that meet to go to the state meet which is next Saturday” he added. 

Flyer Thomas Awad currently holds the fourth best time in the country for the 1 mile at 4:15. Slevin chose to run the junior in the 1000 meter, which he handily won and Awad followed it with the 4 x 800 relay together with fellow runners Dillon Schwartz, Daniel Ebanks, and George Starkie to again place first.

This week, Chaminade’s varsity team goes into the Eastern finals and then to the national competitions the following week.
