Iadevaio Dominates Roslyn with Complete Game

Mineola rightie strikes out 10 Ks as Mustangs down Bulldogs 3-1.

With the tieing runs on base in the top of the seventh, Nick Iadevaio stared at the signs from Vinny Bieniek with opposing pitcher Ben Rothschild at the plate.

Rothschild had gotten the best of Iadevio in all three of his plate appearances and he was looking to turn the tables. On the 0-2 pitch, Iadevaio caught him looking for strike three to end the game. It was the Mineola righty’s tenth strikeout of the game, nailing a clean 3-1 win over Roslyn at home on Thursday afternoon.

“Locating my fastball on the outside corner was the most important thing,” Iadevaio said after the game. “Also throwing my curveball over on the first pitch.”

Iadevio allowed two hits in the second inning, with one of them coming around to score on a sacrifice fly to the second basemen. From that point on, he was nearly flawless, at one point retiring nine consecutive Roslyn hitters and forcing weak popups and slow rollers in the infield.

“Right now Nick is our best pitcher,” Mineola head coach Helms Bohringer said. “He throws the most strikes and he throws his breaking ball for strikes pretty much when he needs to. That’s the type of game we needed today.”

Mineola’s offense was rather sluggish as well, going down quietly in the first three innings before scoring all three of their runs in the fourth.

With one out, first basemen Nick Cerame started the rally with a single. Bienieck followed with a single while Chris Destefano, who hit the game-tieing home run in Tuesday’s loss, lined a single into right center field for the Mustang’s first run of the game. The next batter, Jon Lusardi, stroked one into left field to score two more runs and make it a 3-1 ball game.

Rothschild retired the final batter in the fourth and set down the Mineola lineup 1-2-3 in the fifth and sixth innings.

It was certainly a pitchers duel, with each pitcher working efficiently and effectively. It was a much needed win for the Mustangs, who dropped their previous two games this week.

The Mustangs will take on South Side on April 15 at Mineola High School at 4:30 p.m.
