Iona Prep Shuts Out Chaminade Hockey 2-0

Flyers play smart and outshoot Gaels 35-25 but fall short.

Even in defeat, varsity hockey’s Monday night meeting with Iona Prep will go down as one of the best performances of the season.

The Flyers record dropped to 4-10 after a 2-0 loss Monday night at World Ice Arena in Flushing Meadow Park. Senior goalie Tommy Dorsey made 23 saves in Chaminade’s . Iona Prep improves to 7-5 in the CHSHL A Division.

“We didn’t capitalize at all, but I thought we played really well tonight,” Chaminade coach Frank Bendl said. “We made some mistakes later in the game and they got the advantage from us.”

The Flyers played a calculated first period and focused on controlling the puck, successfully killing two penalties and out shot the Gaels 12-9.

“Everyone came out good and we started off strong, but they wanted it a little more,” Dorsey said. “It would have been a great win for us. We’re in a good stretch right now”

At 9:43 of the second period, Iona Prep sophomore Adam Tracey finished a long rebound right in front of the net as the Gaels took the lead. The Flyers continued to dictate the pace through much of the second period and managed 13 shots on goal. 

In the early moments of the third period, Iona junior Phil Logerfo scored the insurance goal and beat Dorsey on the right side. The Flyers were in the game to the end and out shot the Gaels 35-25.

Despite the shutout loss, the Flyers felt good about their performance and are looking forward to Friday’s game with Monsignor Farrell of Staten Island and their final game of the season on Saturday against Holy Cross.

“We just needed one goal and we would have climbed right back in there,” Bendl said. “We just had to break the ice. It would have been a good win. It would be nice if we can go out with a few wins in the games coming up.”

CROSS CHECK: The Flyers can still play to improve upon last year’s record of 4-11-1. Friday night in Coney Island at Abe Stark Arena, the Flyers will (11-3-0-22 pts) and Saturday night the Flyers (0-13-1-1) who has yet to win a game.
