Kellenberg Bowling Falls as Flyers Roll Into Playoffs

Fenn excelled, Niles got his groove back and Lindgren put on a show in the final regular season match.

Judgement day happened Tuesday afternoon at .

After facing back-to-back losses to the NSCHSAA’s first and second-placed teams – Holy Trinity and St. John the Baptist – team captain Andrew “” Fenn and the Flyers bowling team ended their regular season on a high note by defeating Kellenberg 7-2.

“Some bowlers peak in the first game and others peak in the second or third,” Chaminade Coach Steven Toner said after the match.

In Fenn’s case, it was the first. The junior started his day by rolling three strikes and a spare before clearing the alley again in the fifth frame. Another strike came along in the sixth and was followed by several others.

The Flyer fan section grew quieter and Fenn took more time sizing up the pins after each passing strike. You could hear a pin drop when he was two strikes into the tenth and final frame of the first game.

Fenn’s eleventh and final strike of game one brought him a season high single game score of 278 and the crowd on their feet along with it.

Fenn acted as Chaminade’s leadoff man while freshman Nick Niles played cleanup on the lanes.

The lefty first year entered the game after having trouble on the lanes on Jan. 11 and being absent for the match. Niles performed well in games one and two, but really exploded in game three, chalking up seven strikes in a row from frames three to nine and eight overall for a 256 final score - his second highest single game score to date (behind a 266 in game three  on Dec. 16).

While Fenn and Niles represented the ‘A’ team to the fullest, big things were happening for the ‘B’ team as well.

Junior Joe Bucaria has made a habit of being a consistent bowler all season. His lead-off spot seems to suit him as he averaged around the 200 mark for single game scores. Meanwhile, junior John Lindgren has been struggling in the anchor position so Toner decided to switch it up for the day.

Lindgren responded well to the change and bowled a 204 in game one. However, Bucaria bowled a tepid 155 so Toner made the call to switch the pair back to their original places.

The return to normalcy worked wonders for Bucaria, who closed game two with a slick 227. Lindgren also did well back in his old spot for the final two games. He finished the match with a season high 617 series.

Chaminade finished their regular season with a 9-3 record, putting them in third place. Next up is a rematch against Kellenberg in the NSCHSAA quarterfinals Monday afternoon at home at Sheridan.

“I have been getting the team into a playoff frame of mind,” a pleased Toner said. “As long as they bowl their best and avoid digging holes for themselves early, they have a good shot.”
