Lady Falcons Snap Mineola Girls Soccer Win Streak

Valley Stream girls end drought with 2-1victory over Lady Mustangs.

The Mineola and Valley Stream girls soccer teams both were carrying streaks onto the fields at Tuesday night, the former looking , the latter looking for their first victory of the season.

Sixty minutes later both streaks were over in a 2-1 match that went in favor of the Lady Falcons. 

Despite applying pressure to the Valley Stream defense, Mineola only managed two blocked shots on goal through 13 minutes of play, their break coming two minutes later when senior forward Alicia Mercurio got a shot past Valley Stream sophomore goalkeeper Sammy Jo Shanahan.

Still down 1-0 to start the second, Valley Stream ended up tying the score nine minutes into the half as Paris Mattero scored the first goal off a feed from Christine DeMarco. Three minutes later DeMarco struck again thanks to a corner kick from Brianna Knight. 

“It was a tough game (and) we made silly mistakes,” Mineola head coach Katherine Bennett said. “We had everyone on offense in the last minutes of the game and they didn’t give up.”
