Lady Mustangs Dominate Roosevelt 47-30

Mineola's Medlock sisters prove too big for smaller Roosevelt.

The Lady Mustangs used their size and strength to dominate a smaller Roosevelt team on Tuesday afternoon beating them 47-30.

The Medlock sisters Kerri and Kalie teamed up to collect a total 14 rebounds while eighth grader Charlotte Renker had 9 points and 8 rebounds in the victory .

"We obviously had a height advantage on their smaller starters," coach Denise Zunno said. "It helped with our rebounding on both ends of the floor."

Score: Mineola 47 Roosevelt 30

Turning Point: The Lady Mustangs were all over Roosevelt from the start. They got up 12-2 in the first quarter and were ahead 21-6 at half. It wasn't much of a game until the fourth quarter when Roosevelt's Kissena Atkinson began to heat up. She scored all of the Lady Rider's late points but by then Mineola had pulled too far ahead for any sort of comeback hope for the visitors.

Heroes: The Medlocks were dominant on the inside collecting multiple rebounds. Kerri was the high scorer for the Lady Mustangs with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Eighth grader Charlotte Renker used her size to her advantage collecting 8 rebounds and scoring 9 points.

Quotable: "We're a tall team and we used our height to our advantage," Zunno said. "Kerri and Kalie were big underneath and (guard) Krystie Kern was big for us scoring 9 points."

Bottom Line: The Lady Mustangs' size hurt Roosevelt's smaller starting five from the start. Mineola got off to a big lead and the Lady Rider's early poor shooting performance did not help their cause. Mineola's offensive possessions were also a lot crisper than Roosevelt's. They passed well underneath, got a lot of their own rebounds and as a result scored a lot more points.
