With their first game just days away, the Lady Mustangs are ready to make the most of the 2010 season, and possibly claim the conference championship title that they missed out on last year. Varsity Coach Denise Zunno was able to provide some insight to this year's team and what to expect for the season.
Last Season: The Mineola Lady Mustangs (9-0 conference, 9-1 overall) were the top team in Nassau Conference ABC-IV. But, they suffered a 37-64 loss to Garden City during the Nassau Class 'A' playoff semi-finals.
Players to Watch: Senior Kalie Medlock has been a varsity player throughout her career at . She was awarded "All Conference" player last year, Medlock along with seniors Krystie Kern and Heather Gessener. Kalie and her sister, junior Kerri Medlock, scored over 200 points collectively last season. They also brought in a significant amount of rebounds for the team: 47 for Kalie and nine for Kerri.
Strengths: With the majority of the team returning to the court this year, it's very likely that the team will continue on with their winning streak.
Rivalry: "Our toughest competition during league season include Roosevelt, Seaford and Island Trees," Coach Zunno said. The Lady Mustangs will have to wait until later in the season to see if they will make it to the playoffs to face off against the one team that defeated them last year: Garden City.
Rising Stars: Sophmore Julie Falotico is in for her second varsity season, and also the youngest player on the team. Coach Zunno describes her as "an excellent point guard."
Quotable: "We have our work cut out for us. Many of the teams are strong," Zunno said when asked about her expectations for the coming season. "But our team is experienced and big, so we do have the ability to try and be in first place again."
Season Starter: The Lady Mustangs will hit their home court with a scrimmage against Glen Cove High School at 11:30 a.m. on November 27.
