Lutheran Grounds Flyers 68-37

Crusaders crush Chaminade as match with St. Anthony's looms.

The Flyers were handed their second loss of the season Tuesday at the  by the Lutheran High School Crusaders, 68-37.  Both teams played a fast-paced and aggressive game, but Lutheran came out scoring early in the game and steadily added to their lead till the end of the last period.

Chaminade center and team captain Richard Zoller scored 16 points while co-captain Kevin Sheehy led the team in assists.

The varsity squad couldn’t quite close the gap on the board, despite having a lot of support from the raucous Chaminade fans. Making up the majority of the fans in attendence for the late afternoon match, students displayed their school spirit by loudly chanting and waving their arms in unison side to side when the Lu-Hi team would take foul shots. At one point in the game, the fans emptied the south end bleachers in what could be described as a ”mass migration” for the seats behind the basketball net on the east end of the gymnasium.

Flyers coach James Quinn admitted that he was not surprised by the outcome of the game.  He said he expected his team to play well, but knew they were playing against a very gifted Lutheran squad.“They’re just too good,” Quinn said. “They are on a different level.”

Quinn called the game a “glorified practice” and that it was preparation for their next game against league rivals St. Anthony’s. The Chaminade varsity basketball team remains undefeated with a 2-0 record in the Catholic League that they are looking to extend against their arch-rivals, the Friars.
