Manhasset Scalps Chaminade Lacrosse 3-2

Both top teams battle to honor fallen heroes at annual "Regs Rock" game.

On a breezy spring night members of the family and the Manhasset community came out and came together to honor members of the military, both past and present, and to watch two of the country’s premier varsity lacrosse teams battle it out at the “Regs Rock” game in honor of Sergeant James J. Regan and the U.S. Army Rangers this past Saturday at Manhasset High School.

The Chaminade Flyers and the Manhasset Indians, both nationally ranked teams, played an intense, at times very brutal 44 minutes.

The hard fought game ended in a 3-2 victory for the Manhasset Indians over the Flyers.

Flyer midfielder Walter Rooney fired the opening salvo, scoring a goal 15 seconds into the game. The Indians, taking advantage of the Flyers being two men down, scored a goal before the half to knot the score.

The Manhasset team took the lead 2-1 in the beginning of the third period thanks to Indian John Thomas but Chaminade managed to tie it up with a goal from Brendan DeTommaso assisted by Matt Kavanagh with 1:42 left in the period.

A final goal with four minutes left from Manhasset’s Quinn Moroney ended the Flyer’s chances. It was only the this season, both coming in non-league competition.

Contributing to the loss was five Flyers penalties compared to only one for Manhasset.

An annual tradition, the game is also a fundraiser for the “Lead the Way Fund,” a charity begun by James Regan, whose son, Sgt. James R. Regan – a Chaminade graduate from Manhasset – was killed by an IED in Iraq in February 2007.

“This is a great tradition we have here between Chaminade and Manhasset. They play like brothers, they fight like brothers, and they win like brothers,” Regan said after awarded the trophy to Manhasset. “The kids were playing with their hearts out. It could have gone either way. This is probably one of the best games on Long Island and in the country.”

The funds raised go to help the members of the U.S. Army’s elite Ranger battalions and their families while on active duty and after they return from a war zone.

The Flyers will face arch-rival Wednesday night.
