Mineola Boys Basketball Drops 65-52 to Garden City

Bulva leads Mustangs with 15 points in first loss of 2010-11 season.

The Mineola boys varsity basketball team could not put together a win against a tough Garden City squad Tuesday night at , dropping their first game of the year 65-52.

The Trojans were able to control the tempo of the game, . Mineola was able to hang in during the game's second half, but could not make up a 35-20 first half deficit.

Hero: Mineola forward James Bulva was the lead scoring threat on the day, cutting to the basket and getting to the line. Bulva finished the day with 15 points. The senior also caused a bit of havoc for the Garden City defense and nearly led a comeback in the second half. Senior forward Thomas Ward and sophomore Mike Wasychuck helped out with eight points each.

Turning point: After gaining a 15 point lead to close out the first two quarters 35-20, Trojans  Griffin Eilbeck and Dan Collamussi lead the way for the Trojans in the second half along with James Cauchi, who provided calmness and leadership from his guard position. Garden City gained a 20 point lead entering the end of the fourth qaurter and the win.

Quote: "We've had some senior leaders on the court. They know what the expectations are," Mustang head coach Jim Hegmann said. "We just have to take better care of the basketball and boxing out. Just taking care of the little things."

Bottom Line: Mineola will look to improve on their form as they get ready for their next game . Mineola has the potential to be good but Coach Hegmann said that they must work on the little things. Bulva is a leader amongst his teammates and showed how even on an off night, he can still go for 15 points.
