Mineola Boys Lacrosse Wins Fifth Straight Game

Mustangs defeat Rams 10-6 to keep win streak alive.

By Gary Simeone

The Mineola boys varsity lacrosse win streak now stands at five.

Tuesday the Mustangs butted heads with the Rams, downing West Hempstead 10-6 in a home game at Hampton Stadium to remain in second place in Conference IV. Team captain Timmy Gill had five goals while Brian Gaffney had two goals and two assists to help lead Mineola to victory.

"I thought that we played hard for the most part but that there were a few opportunities we didn't cash in on," said head coach Glenn Cocoman. "I think we were kind of looking ahead to our Friday game against Cold Spring Harbor and we were not as focused as we should have been."

Mineola will find out how good they really are when they face a tough Seahawks team who currently stands at 6-2, 2-0 in conference at Wilson Park. It will be the Mustangs first major test of the season and Cocoman knows how important this game is.

"It's going to be a good game against two teams who are undefeated in conference play," he said. "Whoever wins will have an advantage heading into the playoffs."

After Cold Spring Harbor the schedule does not get any easier for Mineola as they face Conference I powerhouse MacArthur next Thursday night on their home field at 7 p.m. Then they will play an early morning Saturday game against conference headliner Seaford at 10 a.m.

The Mustangs will close out the regular season with two home games against Island Trees and Oyster Bay before facing off against currently undefeated Friends Academy in an away game on May 10.
