Mineola Boys Track the Competition at Friendship Games

Mustangs run 13 in 300-meter dash competition.

A day after the Mineola girls track team visited Nassau Community College Wednesday evening for the Friendship Games, the boys' had their chance to hit the track Thursday.

Roughly 25 members of the 52-man roster showed up for a night of long distance running, middle distance running and sprints.

Head coach Zachary Sabatino said that Mineola prepared for the meet by "undergoing hard training Monday and Tuesday, followed by a light Wednesday workout."

Long distance highlights included Fred Lang in the 3,200-meter run. The sophomore finished with a 10:33 while senior Nuno Tinoco "ran a smart race" in the 1,600-meter run according to Sabatino. Tinoco finished in fourth place with a swift 4:47.

The award for most heart goes to Gilberto Torres. The freshman was leading the 1,000-meter run two laps in before someone stepped on the back of his shoe, sending him sprawling. Torres went back for his shoe and proceeded to "take off like a bat out of hell," Sabatino said. He did not win the race but finished strong with a 3:24.

The 600-meter dash was all about senior Pedro Vela, who finished with a personal best of 1:37:90. "He's showing that he's really ready to start racing fast," Sabatino said, looking pleased.

Senior Tom Satalino "continues to improve" with a 7.11 time in the 55-meter sprint, but the 300-meter dash was where Mineola predominantly displayed their speed.

Junior Kevin Lang ran his personal best in the event with a 40.9, freshman David Park "ran a great race" with a 43.70 and Vela earned a respectable 42.83 after running the 600.

This was Mineola's fifth meet of the season and first at Nassau Community College. There is a consensus between girls' coach Tom Leninger and Sabatino that the slippery track is not optimal for the best performance, but Sabatino was pleased with his team. He insisted that the boys are progressing and will facilitate the improvement with a practice scheduled on Monday. "If we keep up the momentum over the holidays," he said, "the sky is the limit when we get back."

Mineola's next meet will be a crossover at Suffolk Community College on Dec. 28.
