Mineola Girls Basketball All Over Lawrence 54-37

Lady Mustangs open conference play Friday night with 3-1 record.

The Mineola girls varsity basketball team scored 11 points in the first quarter against a visiting Lawrence team on Wednesday night at . But their defense held the Golden Tornadoes to just two.

That would be the theme all night as Mineola outscored Lawrence in every quarter en route to a dominating 54-37 win.

“Our whole team played well tonight,” coach Denise Zunno said. “But the combo of Kerri Medlock, Julie Falotico and Samantha Venus really made the difference for us.”

A senior forward, Medlock lead the team in scoring with 21 points and collected a game high 14 rebounds while Venus contributed 20. Falotico was a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball where she recorded 10 steals for the game.

“We’ve looked pretty good in our first couple of games,” Zunno said. “Hopefully we'll continue to play well going into our conference opener Friday night.”

The Lady Mustangs will play an away game at North Shore at 6:30 p.m. Friday night.

On the other side of the table the Golden Tornadoes looked out of sync from the start of the game with passing and shot selection key areas for improvement.

“I thought we started the game off too slow and got into foul trouble early,” Lawrence head coach George Klein said. “A couple of our key players were also out with injuries. The girls gave 100 percent effort but the fact of the matter is we're still young and progressing as a team after losing some key players to graduation.”
