Marissa Aphan's late goals spark Lady Mustangs over New Hyde Park 17-15.

When you think of Mineola’s offense you usually talk about their big three scorers, Ashley Stavish, Courtney Capobianco and Julie Falotico. The trio did have a nice game in the Mustangs 17-15 win over New Hyde Park on Wednesday but it was midfielder Marissa Aphan who stole the show with two late goals to break a 15-15 tie and give the Lady Mustangs their first conference win of the season.

“Marissa was the big surprise for us today,” Mineola head coach Frank Massaro said. “She played like she is capable of playing and helped us secure the win.”

Massaro also gave credit to goalie Emily Carboine who had 10 saves in the game.

“She definitely made some nice saves on goal throughout the game. She was very focused today.”

New Hyde Park coach Lorin Wirth on the other hand, was disappointed that her team gave up the lead so late in the game.

“We had a pretty sizeable lead but they cameback on us,” said Wirth. “We did not play as a great unit out there as far as lacrosse sense and communicating on the field. We need to learn how to spread the field more.”

New Hyde Park’s Jillian Graziano had a game high 7 goals.

Both teams are now 1-7 in conference. Mineola has one more game left on their schedule and New HydePark has two games left.

Mineola will play at home against East Meadow on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

New Hyde Park will play at Calhoun on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. and next Saturday at Sewanhaka at 4:30 p.m.
