Mineola Girls Lacrosse Shuts Out Clarke 9-0

Lady Mustang goalie Katie Dul keeps Clarke scoreless with 14 saves.

In a game that the team expected to be a pretty even match at the start, the Lady Mustangs lacrosse team defeated Clarke with a shutout of 9-0.

Head coach Frank Massaro gave a great deal of credit to his goalkeeper Katie Dul, saying she played “an incredible game today and I’m very proud of her.”

Dul saved a season record 14 goals, eliminating the ability of Clarke to answer any of the 9 Mineola goals.

The Lady Rams had put immediate pressure on Dul and the rest of the defense after winning the initial draw. Mineola defender Teresa Ferreri was especially aggressive in her guarding of the goal, particularly during the first few minutes of the game when Clarke was trying to establish dominance.

“We talked really well and pressured,” Dul said. “It was a team effort out there.”

Mineola’s first strike came from attacker Kerri Medlock, who scored four minutes in and was followed up by fellow attacker Ashley Stavish just after the draw, before Medlock added her second.

Medlock fired off another two shots in the ensuing minute before a Clarke timeout. Stavish came back with a goal, assisted by defender Erica Antonison to make it 4-0 just before the half.

At the start of the second half, Medlock and midfielder Lacey Fater scored two goals in quick succession to make it 6-0, which led to a goalkeeper substitute by Clarke.

The Lady Rams made a strong effort to bring the game back up to the Mineola goal and while Clarke made several shots, Dul blocked them all.

Antonison came through with her first goal of the game and senior midfielder Kalie Medlock scored right off the draw.

Clarke continued to be able to put the ball in scoring position, keeping pressure on the defense, but was unable to make a successful shot.

The senior Medlock sister scored again with six minutes left in the game, prompting Clarke to call a second timeout. This didn’t have the effect Clarke Coach Rick Aragona intended, as the game ended without a goal from the Lady Rams.

“We couldn’t put the ball in the cage,” Atruguna said. “All our balls had no zip.”

Massaro said it showed how the team relied heavily on the “outstanding game Katie gave us,” as the team continues to progress.

Mineola moves to a 2-1 record as they go on to challenge the Lady Blue Jays at Seaford next Thursday at 4 p.m.
