Mineola Girls’ Softball Looks to Rebuild in 2011

After falling short of their legacy in 2010, the  girls’ varsity softball team is back and ready to rock on the field. Head Coach and Lady Mustangs veteran, Melissa Skupp, has high hopes for her team and expects that the girls could come out on top in Conference A3.

2010 record: 8-7 in Nassau Conference A3’s regular season.

Coaching Staff: Melissa Skupp (fourth year with team, first year as head coach), Daryl Whitmer (first year)

Key Players: Krystie Kern, catcher; Tracy Reardon, centerfield; Rosanna Nardella, rightfield; Christina Palmenteri, shortstop.

Expectations: The Lady Mustangs missed their shot at the playoffs last year after facing some tough competition but the girls are hoping that will be a thing of the past come May. 

“They want to win our conference, go to the playoffs and do well this season,” Coach Skupp said. “I really think that they’ll be able to do that. They have all the potential in the world. This is the best group of girls I’ve coached in four years, they just need to gain a little confidence.”

Coach Skupp says: “We are trying to rebuild the softball program, the interest went down a little bit. Daryl Whitmer, our assistant coach and former centerfielder for Maryland, brings agility and a little bit of edge to the team. He brings a lot of speed and conditioning. All of the girls are really excited and we had a great turnout this year.”
