It was a great night for a lacrosse game under the lights at Denton Field on Wednesday night as the Mineola boys varsity lacrosse team pulled out an upset win over conference rival Oyster Bay. The Mustangs battled back and forth with the Baymen but were able to hold on to the lead and get the eventual victory, 13-10.

Attackmen Brian Gaffney and James Gerstner helped Mineola pull through in a tight game by scoring timely goals to help the Mustangs stretch the lead. Gaffney had 5 goals in the game, hitting a key netter midway through the second quarter to break a 3-3 tie. Gerstner had 3 goals and two assists helping Mineola keep Oyster Bay at bay. Lorenzo Gulinao also had a key goal with 49 seconds left in the third quarter to help give Mineola an 11-9 lead.

"It was definitely a tight game," said Mineola head coach Glenn Cocoman. "We gave up two late goals to end the first half which I wasn't happy about but were able to pull out a nice victory in the end."

The goals that Cocoman was referring to was off the stick of Oyster Bay's, Jack Puccio who scored two goals within a 45 second span to close out the half and cut the Mustangs lead to one. Puccio, a 5'9" sophomore, was one of the smaller players on the field but was like a bulldog rushing the net.

Mineola got off to a good start in the second half, scoring five goals including Gulinao's late third third quarter goal to an 11-9 third quarter lead. The Mustangs tacked on two more goals in the fourth and only allowed one Oyster Bay goal, thanks to the aggressive goal keeping by John Clancy.

The Mustangs are now 4-2 in conference and will play their final regular season game at undefeated Friends Academy on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
