Mineola Port Youth Team Takes 2011 Columbus Cup Trophy

The Mineola Portuguese Soccer Club’s first ever youth team, captured the 2011 Brooklyn Italians Columbus Cup Tournament.

The NY Thunder earned the U8 division trophy Wednesday with an undefeated record, beating out numerous local and out of state soccer clubs in the two-day tournament.

This cup marks the youth team’s third championship, having won the fifth Annual Rough Riders Independence Cup and the Council Rock United Tournament in Pennsylvania.

Originally a one-team program, the youth program of has doubled into two more teams this year, with a fourth planned for 2012. Parents cite the independence of the program as its chief characteristic, allowing the children to play in an environment that stresses friendship and development.

The MPSC NY Thunder are current favorites for several national tournaments that will be held early next year.
