Mineola Shuts Out Seaford Boys Soccer

Mustangs take advantage of Vikings' offensive struggles to win 2-0.

Despite missing two early opportunities against Seaford Tuesday night, including a free kick from 30 yards out, senior Christian Lird proved that the third time was a charm, kicking a penalty shot into the lower left-hand corner past goalkeeper Bryan Graziose.

The single goal was all Mineola would need, but in the 50th minute freshman Daniel Pardo sent in a cross to Lird who found the back of the net again for the 2-0 final on the backfield at .

“We knew going in that they were going to be very good,” Vikings head coach Ralph Pascarella said. “Our guys worked hard, so if we are going to work this hard against other teams, then we are going to do alright. We had a few chances that we didn’t capitalize on, but the effort was good.”

Mineola had dominated the offensive end right from the beginning, creating a multitude of chances against Graziose, who finished with eight saves.

The Vikings struggled to find many solid chances on Mustangs’ goalkeeper Kevin Mulder, who finished with a single save, a testament to a solid defensive line for the full 80 minutes, which included Daniel Muller, Richie Forte and Denis Lazo-Cruz.

In the 24th minute, Vikings defender Conor Anderson grazed a loose ball with his hand in the box, setting up the penalty kick for Mineola. In the early minutes of the second half, Mineola senior Paul Sandoval put an attempt just right of the goal in the early minutes of the second half.

“My defense has size, skill and patience, and we are able to move the ball in the back very easily,” Mineola head coach Paul Pereira. said “We are able to make the other team run and make up a lot of space. I think we played exceptionally well, disciplined soccer, but we need to work on finishing.”

The visiting Mustangs retain their undefeated record, advancing to and . Seaford dropped to 2-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference.

Mineola will host Island Trees (3-0-1, 2-0-0) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
