Mineola Slammers Softball Celebrates Successful First Season

Girls 10U team enters tournament 3-3-1 in fall softball season.

This fall the Mineola Slammers 10U softball team celebrated a successful first season playing in the Franklin Square League and The Kathy Pistillo Classic.

After losing their first three games of the 2011 season, the Slammers took the field at home against Garden City South, winning 4-3. The Slammers scored twice in the second with RBI outs from Jenna Cox and Emily Haller. In the third the Slammers scored twice more on RBI singles from Kailtyn Wetzel and Toni Ondris to lead 4-0.

Garden City South bats came awake in the fifth inning with the tying run getting as far as third with Emily Haller striking out the side to save the victory.

The following week the Slammers traveled to Franklin Square and came away with a 9-8 victory.

Mineola scored got out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to efforts on the bases from Mikalya Dalton and Erin Miller. In the second inning the Slammers took a seemingly insurmountable 7-1 lead with two steals from Jillian Haller and who scored on an overthrow. Samantha Tresled manned the hot corner at third while pitcher Kailtyn Wetzel had five strikeouts in two innings of work.

The next game was at New Hyde Park and the Slammers gave away a big lead and ended up in a 10-10 tie. The Slammers got two RBI singles by Meaghan McCaffrey and a RBI single by Miranda Bradley and Samantha Tresled. Victoria Vangrembergen and Victoria DeFrancis lead the team with four stolen bases each in the game. 

The Slammers ended their season with a 6-2 victory at Lynbrook. In the game pitchers Kailtyn Wetzel and Emily Haller baffled the Lynbrook hitters, as Wetzel had six strikeouts in two innings pitched and Haller retired all nine batters she faced, seven by strikeouts. Jenna Cox scored from first on a steal and overthrow and made a solid play at second to get the last out of the game. Mikalya Dalton and Erin Miller also made significant defensive plays at first.

The girls finished the first season of tournament play at 3-3-1 and would like to thank their coaches, Liz Nygaard, Dan McCaffrey, Bryan Bradley, Ray and Michelle Haller, Joe Vangrembergen and Darren Wetzel.
