Mineola Softball Falls to Roslyn 3-2

Lady Bulldogs leap ahead Lady Mustangs in Conference A-III standings.

Though the Lady Mustangs have been a bit unpredictable this season, the girls of Mineola varsity softball expected a big win Tuesday afternoon when they visited Roslyn, especially after their  earlier this year.

Before Tuesday’s matchup, the Lady Bulldogs had only won a single game, but head coach Andrew Demakopoulos always believed in his team.

“We go into every game hoping to win,” he said. “We have been playing very well, but we always gave up a big inning.”

Their hopes came true this time around, and Mineola was defeated in a very close match up, 3-2.

“We didn't give up an inning today, and our pitcher threw strikes,” Demakopoulos added. “That's all you can ask.”

Adriana McKeever put the Lady Mustangs up on the scoreboard in the second inning to get the game started, but Roslyn fired back quickly in the third.

With two outs in the inning, Mariel Chase broke it open for Roslyn with a single home run to bring the game to a tie. Momentum was pumping within the team when Kendall Berman and Ally Sheinbaum passed home plate before the final out, boosting the Lady Bulldogs to a 3-1 lead.

Kathryn Priolo kicked off the seventh for Mineola with a power blast to center field that bought her two bases. Shannon Maloney was next at bat, with a world of pressure riding on her potential play. Maloney’s line drive sent Priolo running past home, putting the Lady Mustangs back into the game.

But the visiting team couldn’t finish the job, and the game ended in Roslyn’s favor to bump them up above Mineola in Conference A-III.

“We expected to win today,” Mineola head coach Melissa Skupp said after their loss. “We put the ball into play and Roslyn made the plays.”
