A New Season for Chaminade Bowling

Flyers loosen wrists and gear up for 2010 season.

Pins toppled emphatically at  Tuesday afternoon as coach Steven Toner conducted tryouts for the  2010 varsity bowling team.

Eight players are returning to the squad this year, including one senior, four juniors and three sophomores. Junior Andrew Fenn, an old member but new captain after the graduation of Ethan Noblesala, will be taking over the task of leading the Flyers to victory this season. "He should be one of the top bowlers in the league this year," said Toner, who is in his seventh year as Chaminade coach. "He is great at organizing and encouraging the younger guys to do well."

With between two to four spots left, six "promising" freshman left it all in the alleys, trying to join the ranks of the 2008-2009 NSCHSAA champions; ranks formerly occupied by lord of the lanes Rob Gotterbarn, who has travelled as far as Las Vegas for tournaments and who now rolls for St. Johns University.

"I always look at a four-year-plan," Toner said, explaining he refrains from "stacking the team heavy with seniors" because it leads to frequent changes year-to-year. This season he is hoping to acquire a starting lineup featuring "two kids with a 220 average, two with a 200, and two with a 180."

The Flyers, who lost in the semi-finals of the NSCHSAA last season to St. John the Baptist, will kick off their season on Tuesday, November 9 at Sheridan Lanes against the team they beat in the finals two seasons ago and the reigning champions, Holy Trinity. "It should be a tough match," Toner said. "They are a perennial powerhouse with a strong bowling tradition, but so are we."

Beyond next week, "my goal this season is to go ten and two," Toner said, "and hopefully be back in the championship this year."
