Owls Knock Out Mineola Boys Basketball 52-36

Lynbrook jumps out to a 31-13 halftime lead as Mustangs struggle with shot selections.

An array of offensive issues plagud the Mineola varsity boys basketball team Friday night at , unable to find the net and making only eight of 32 shots from the field, leading to a 52-36 loss in non-league play.

The Owls meanwhile managed to run off 31 points in the first half compared to 13 for Mineola.

“We dug ourselves a hole early and we weren’t able to get out of it,” Mineola head coach Jim Hegmann said. “The I feel like this team hasn't come ready to play and it was the same story again tonight.”

The Mustangs did look better in the second half as forward Mike Waszchuk repeatedly drove to the basket scoring the majority of his game high 20 points. The junior also had 14 points alone from the line in the loss.

Mineola was able to capitalize on several Owl turnovers, holding them to only 6 points in the third quarter. Their late effort would not be enough though as Lynbrook got back on track with some nice shots down the stretch from guards Mike McVeigh and Johnny Emmerich.

"I thought we moved the ball well and our shots were falling particularly in the first half," Lynbrook coach Chris Rube said. "(McVeigh) played well and we got a nice effort from Rocco Scibelli. After some early season losses I needed to get the point across to them how important it is to play defense.”

In his second game back Scibelli scored a team-high 11 points for Lynbrook.

“When Mineola fought back in the second half I thought we did a good job of holding them off,” Rube said.

The Mustangs are now (2-3, 1-0) and will play home against Sewanhaka on Thursday at 5:45 p.m. Lynbrook (2-4, 1-1) will play their next game at East Rockaway on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
