Sheehy Leads Flyers Basketball to 64-45 Win Over St. Dominic

The 'Ice Breaker' cometh with 4 FGs and 21 points Friday night.

There are plenty of captivating basketball moves such as stylish slam dunks, fiery fade-aways and dramatic drives that draw ‘ooh’s’ and ‘aah’s’ from the crowd.

On any given night a spectator may witness any and all of the above during a Chaminade game.

However, when the Flyers (14-3) the Bayhawks (3-10) Friday afternoon, arguably the most awe-inspiring move in basketball – the three-pointer – reigned supreme.

Senior Guard Kevin Sheehy, who led his team with 14 points in their blowout 74-39 win over Westhampton Saturday, offered up the first crowd-pleaser of the afternoon. His heavy trey at 6:58 in the first quarter broke the ice for the Flyers.

Sinking field goals in grandiose fashion is something that Sheehy is becoming accustomed to doing. The ‘Ice Breaker’ banged one in from beyond the arc just 15 seconds into Chaminade’s game against St. Mary’s Jan. 28.

After Sheehy netted his most recent game-opening three, he hit another with four seconds left in the same quarter. While everyone loves a buzzer-beater, the senior guard's most impressive downtown drop came at 3:23 in the second.

Two minutes earlier, the score was tied 18-18. Sheehy drove hard to the hoop and drew a foul at 4:41 to make it a 3-point play. After the Bayhawks failed to respond in kind, the Flyers pushed the ball right back down the court and looked for a way to penetrate St. Dominic’s defense. After some passing around the key, time on the shot clock was dwindling and the Bayhawks’ defense wasn’t loosening.

Precious seconds ticked away on the clock as St. Dominic players swiped hungrily at the ball.

With the shot clock under 10, Sheehy found himself holding the ball with no open men in sight and he himself being stuck like glue to the hardwood.

“Five!” assistant Coach Greg DeVerna yelled, indicating the seconds left.

To Sheehy, it was like someone shocked him with a cattle prod. In one fluid motion, the Flyer captain switched to a shooting position and tacked on his third 3 pointer of the night.

“I have been working on that since I was a little kid,” Sheehy said of his outside shooting ability. “Confidence is just as important as technique.”

Sheehy chalked up yet another 3 pointer midway through the third quarter and led both teams with 21 points overall.

The ‘Ice Breaker’ wasn’t the only one with a penchant for outside shooting that afternoon. Speedy guard John Gallego hit trey of his own in the second and fourth quarter and senior guard Matthew Gonyon sank one in the third.

The Flyers are now 6-1 and second place behind St. Mary’s in the Long Island CHSAA.

Next up, they will in a make-up for the cancelled Tuesday afternoon game.
