The Town of North Hempstead Port Washington-Manhasset Bay Kayak Run is set for Saturday, July 26 in Port Washington. The event offers the chance to enjoy kayaking or canoeing in the bay and also benefit the Community Chest of Port Washington, which provides funds for non-profit organizations in Port Washington.
Now in its tenth year, the annual event begins at 10 a.m. with a bang – literally, as a cannon blast signifies the run’s start. Participants paddle at their own pace, leisurely or full steam ahead, along Manhasset Bay’s five-mile course to designated locations where they receive raffle tickets.
At 12:30 p.m., upon hearing the canon fire again, paddlers go ashore and head for the Town Dock, for a raffle-drawing. The lucky top prize winner will receive a kayak.
Everyone is welcome, and no experience is necessary. Registration forms are available at Town Dock, Atlantic Outfitters on Inspiration Wharf, West Marine in the Soundview Shopping Plaza, or at PortChest.org. Forms and entry fees can be dropped off at Atlantic Outfitters on Inspiration Wharf or the Town Dock.
The entry fees are adults-$25 ($40 if paid on July 26) and under 21 years old -$5 ($25 if paid on July 26).
Discounted kayak rentals will be available at Atlantic Outfitters. Call Atlantic Outfitters in advance to reserve a kayak or if you have questions regarding kayaks at 516-767-2215. Participants are also welcome to bring their own kayak. Kayaks may be launched from the Town Dock or Manorhaven Park.
Sponsors of this event include the Community Chest of Port Washington and the Town of North Hempstead with support from the Peter & Jeri Dejana Family Foundation. All proceeds will go to the Community Chest of Port Washington and the 27 non-profit organizations that receive grants, serving the people of Port Washington.
