10 Places to Pick Apples on Long Island Before They're All Gone

They're in season now, but won't be for long.

It's getting chilly, the kids are in school, baseball is heading into the postseason and, oh right, the apples are ripe for the picking. With fall having officially arrived on Long Island, we thought we'd share this regional guide on where to pick local apples while the season is still going.

Make sure you hurry out there, because most of them will be gone by Halloween.

1. Lewin Farms

Perhaps the region's most well-known orchard, at 812 Sound Avenue in Wading River, Lewin Farms is a 1,100 acre family farm featuring U-pick apples and other tree fruit. The apple picking actually wont he road from the main market, off Fresh Pond Avenue. The farm is open for apple picking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Monday. 2. Milk Pail Farmstand

The Milk Pail, at 1346 Montauk Highway in Water Mill, features more than 20 varieties of apples on 20 acres. The farm is Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through October. For more information, click here.

3. Seven Ponds Orchard

The Seven Ponds Orchard at 65 Seven Ponds Road, Mill Road features macintosh, gala, and ginger gold apples. The orchard is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

4. Wickham's Fruit Farm

The Wickham Fruit Farm, which in the Wickham family for generations, is located at 28700 Route 25 in Cutchogue. The farm is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday and features 200 acres of fruit trees. You must be a member to pick apples. For membership information, click here.

5. Woodside Orchards

Woodside Orchards has two locations, one at 729 Main Road in Aquebogue and another on Manor Lane in Jamesport. The Aquebogue location is open Saturday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Jamesport location is open on weekends only from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information, click here. U-pick season for this orchards starts on Sept. 14.

The orchard has also opened a hard cider tasting room this year, which could keep the adults busy while the kids are sipping on the virgin stuff.

6. Davis Peach Farm

Davis Peach Farm is not just about peaches — the farm also offers U-pick apples daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The farm is on Hulse Landing Road in Wading River and features 20 varieties of apples. For more information, click here.

7. Harbes Farm

Harbes Farm hosts apple picking at its family friendly orchard, at 5698 Sound Avenue in Riverhead. Apple picking is available from 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sundays. For more information, click here.

And you know what's really nice about Harbes? They also make their own wine, have farmstand activities for kids, and sell all sorts of North Fork-grown goodies. Did we mention the make their own wine?

8. Windy Acres

Windy Acres Farm, located at 3010 Middle Country Road in Calverton, offers pick your own apples daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for more information, click here.

9. Hank's Pumpkin Town

While apple picking is certainly a draw to the this Montauk Highway treat in Watermill, Hank's also features a maze park, face painting, wagon rides, fall decorations, a playground and, of course, pumpkin picking. Then there are the goodies: roasted sweet corn, baked fruit pies, apples, candy apples, popcorn, cider doughnuts, cookies and apple cider. Hank's is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

10. Fort Salonga Farm

Long Island's westernmost U-pick orchard features rows and rows of low-growing apple trees, which make it easier for the kids to pick their own. The farm, at 30 Meadow Glen Road in Northport, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
