Brush Fire Restricts LIRR Between Mineola and East Williston Thursday Morning

Train traffic temporarily restricted as firefighters extinguish brush fire on tracks.

A brush fire on the LIRR tracks on Washington Avenue near Elm Place slowed train traffic through Mineola Thursday afternoon.

Smoke emanating from the tracks was reported at about 10:59 a.m. Thursday. Several engines and numerous members of the Mineola Fire Department responded to the fire, containing it.

The fire department also requested that train traffic be restricted on the Oyster Bay branch between the Mineola and East Williston LIRR stations in order for firefighters to contain the fire. Numerous crossing gates at Main Street and Willis Avenue in Mineola were observed to be lowered during that time, restricting vehicular traffic.

The blaze was extinguished at about 11:45 a.m. The train traffic restriction was subsequently lifted.
