Mineola Gives May Update on Jericho, Bruce Terrace Projects

Road striping left to be done on Jericho Turnpike repaving.

State crews are about three-quarters finished with the resurfacing of Jericho Turnpike, requiring an anticipated two additional days to complete the asphalting which ran from Beebe Road and Glen Cove Road according to Mineola Superintendent of Public Works Tom Rini during a meeting of the village board on May 1 at the village hall.

Rini added that there would be an two additional weeks worth of work required – conducted mostly at night – with the finalization of road striping and markings.

“They’re working during the day now doing some of the traffic loop detectors on the side roads, but there will be some, as they call them, home-runs to the electric box that will require going across the street, across Jericho Turnpike so that’s probably going to be done at night,” Rini said, noting that crews suffered several stoppages due to colder weather.

Regarding the Bruce Terrace flood mitigation project, Rini reported that the village has completed the first phases, installing the Liberty Avenue interceptor, completed installation of catch basins as well as work on Bruce Terrace itself and putting in a 30-inch pipeline and additional basins.

Crews have installed the drop-manhole which is to be the connector at Sheridan Boulevard in the Wilson Park parking lot inside the recharge basin, which the county contractor will then meet in order to bring the water from Sheridan Boulevard to the second portion of the recharge basin.

The Dow Avenue drainage line, the final phase of the village’s portion of the project, is being held up due to a conflict with a gas main.

“National Grid needed to replace their gas main and unfortunately we gave them a set of plans and I guess assumed the line for the drainage was where they should install there gas main, so they installed it right where our drainage needs to be,” Rini said. “We’re working with them to get that altered.”

The county contractor is reportedly awaiting a start date for that part of the project. The project is a three-way partnership between the village, Nassau County and the Town of North Hempstead.

Rini also reported that most of the Hurricane Sandy-related repairs in the village have been completed and that he is waiting on utility poles that have to be installed at the PAL field and Wilson Field. All of the lights have been received. A restoration contractor is expected in a week to lay down top soil and sod where uprooted trees were located.

Village crews also installed concrete steps at Wilson Field on a grade differential coming out of the dugouts that should be completed before the start of the baseball season. They are also doing grass repairs and field No. 3 is ready and usable for the upcoming season according to Rini.
