Division Doubles Mineola Girls Lacrosse

It has been a tough season thus far for the Mineola girls varsity lacrosse team as they fell to Division, 8-4 on Monday afternoon at home, remaining winless in conference play. Mineola kept the game tight in the first half but Division pulled away on the strength of Jess Minuto’s four goals to win the game.

Mineola (0-5, 1-5) took a 2-1 lead in the middle of the first half on a shot by Courtney Capobianco off an assist by attacker Ashley Stavish. Both girls had two goals each in the game. But that would be the last time the Mustangs would hold an advantage as Division scored four straight to take a 5-2 halftime lead.

The second half was all Blue Dragons as Minuto scored her fourth goal at the 12-minute mark, giving Division a dominant 7-2 lead. Mineola got two late goals off the sticks of Stavish and Capobianco but the effort would be in vain as Mineola dropped their their fifth conference game.

“It’s been a tough go so far,” Mineola head coach Frank Massaro said. “We definitely need to improve in a lot of areas.”

Mineola recently lost its leading scorer in Natalie Kain, who is out for the season with an illness – but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“Ashley Stavish and Julie Falotico are stepping up on offense and our defensive wings are doing a nice job so far,” Massaro said. “We just need to pull it all together.”

The team recently got rained out in a game against Island Trees but will try and get back in the winning column when they face Locust Valley on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Locust Valley High School.
