Person Fatally Struck Near Mineola LIRR Station

Pedestrian struck at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday night at Willis Avenue crossing.

Long Island Rail Road officials have confirmed a fatality Sunday night near the Mineola train station.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sunday night near the Willis Avenue at-grade crossing just east of the Mineola LIRR station where the main line branches off to the Oyster Bay Line.

Trains on the Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay and Ronkonkoma branches experienced a temporary suspension of service between Hicksville and Jamaica.

One track was later restored to service at about 11:50 p.m. according to officials.

The train that struck the person originated in Ronkonkoma at 9:40 p.m. and was headed west to Penn Station, scheduled to arrive at 10:59 p.m.

Another pedestrian was struck at the location in August 2010.

LIRR, MTA police are conducting an investigation with Nassau County Police.

Update: According to detectives, a 62 year old Mineola man, who was running northbound on foot crossing the train tracks at Willis Avenue and Hinck Way, was struck by a westbound Long Island Rail Road train. The victim, whose name is being withheld pending family notification, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at 10:35 pm at the scene.

MTA detectives are continuing the investigation into this incident.
