Irish American Society Celebrates 80th Anniversary

Nassau dignitaries come out in support of Mineola-based society's milestone and renovations.

In its 80 years as the Irish cultural center of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, the  in Mineola has played host to many signature events that have attracted top dignitaries. In 2007 for example, the Willis Avenue-based hall welcomed Irish President Mary McAleese as she visited Long Island during her five-day visit to the United States.

Last Saturday night, as the society celebrated its and completion of its extensive interior and exterior renovation, dignitaries including former Mineola Mayor turned state , current , North Hempstead  and Garden City Mayor Don Brudie came out to pay tribute.

The political leaders delivered proclamations and words of praise on an organization that has served millions of those with Irish heritage in the New York metropolitan area.

“This great place has been a repository of so much great culture over the years,” Martins said.

A ribbon-cutting outside the building heralded the completion of the newly renovated exterior, as well as an extensive renovation of the interior including new floors, lighting and furnishings.

Entertainment was provided by the  and a performance from the , which holds classes at the hall.

“The volunteers here are unbelievable,” Society President Betty McLaughlin said. “We have a new kitchen, new floors, new lighting. A lot went into it and we could not have done it without the volunteers.”

The anniversary comes during a busy period for the society as this Saturday, the society will host their second-biggest event of the year next to : the Harvest Moon Ball.

The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and the Andy Healy Band will be performing. The donation is $80 per person. For reservations, call 516-746-9392.
