VIDEO: Islanders Deliver Toys to Winthrop Kids for Holidays

New York Islanders players hand out toys and deliver smiles at Winthrop children's ward.

New York Islanders forwards Kevin Poulin, Josh Bailey, Matt Moulson and goalie Frans Nielsen at the pediatric ward at Wednesday, bringing them a pile of gifts and some Christmas cheer to put a smile on their faces this holiday season.

Several children housed in the ward found themselves brought into the small playroom, which offers a brief respite from the daily reminders of hospital life for the young patients and is stacked with many shelves full of books, board games, a few computer terminals and a modest video game center.

Children admitted into the ward can be diagnosed with any number of conditions including appendicitis, gastroenterological, cancer, flu and pneumonia. Patients range in age from just a few days after birth up to age 21. While the average stay in the ward is usually a few days, some have been admitted several months, while others are just there for a night or two.

After handing out a couple of gifts, the quartet made the rounds, visiting other children who could not make it into the playroom at their bedsides, as well as going down to the childhood cancer ward and the emergency rooms.
